2026 calendar and UK bank holidays: questions

How many bank holidays are there in 2026?

8 in England and Wales, 10 in Scotland and 10 in Northern Ireland (GOV.UK). England and Wales: New Year’s Day (Thursday 1 January), Good Friday (Friday 3 April), Easter Monday (Monday 6 April), Early May bank holiday (Monday 4 May), Spring bank holiday (Monday 25 May), Summer bank holiday (Monday 31 August), Christmas Day (Friday 25 December) and Boxing Day (substitute day, Monday 28 December).

Which bank holidays are different in Scotland and Northern Ireland?

Scotland also has 2nd January (Friday 2 January), World Cup bank holiday (Monday 15 June), Summer bank holiday (Monday 3 August) and St Andrew’s Day (Monday 30 November), but not Easter Monday (Monday 6 April) or Summer bank holiday (Monday 31 August). Northern Ireland also has St Patrick’s Day (Tuesday 17 March) and Battle of the Boyne (Orangemen’s Day, substitute day, Monday 13 July). Choose the region above the calendar to see its days and working days.

What is a substitute day?

When a bank holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, another weekday becomes the day off, usually the following Monday. Battle of the Boyne (Orangemen’s Day) falls on Sunday 12 July, so Monday 13 July is a substitute bank holiday in Northern Ireland. Boxing Day falls on Saturday 26 December, so Monday 28 December is a substitute bank holiday in all of the UK.

When is Easter 2026?

Easter Sunday is Sunday 5 April 2026. Good Friday (Friday 3 April) is a bank holiday in all of the UK; Easter Monday (Monday 6 April) is a bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland but not in Scotland.

When do the clocks change in 2026?

The clocks go forward 1 hour at 1am on Sunday 29 March 2026 and go back 1 hour at 2am on Sunday 25 October 2026, everywhere in the UK (Summer Time Act 1972). British Summer Time (BST) is the period in between.

Is there an extra bank holiday in 2026?

Yes, in Scotland only: the World Cup bank holiday on Monday 15 June. England, Wales and Northern Ireland have no extra bank holiday in 2026.

How many working days are there in 2026?

253 in England and Wales, 251 in Scotland and 251 in Northern Ireland: Monday to Friday minus the bank holidays of each region. Each month’s count is beside its name in the calendar.

When does week 1 of 2026 start?

Week 1 of 2026 starts on Monday 29 December 2025. 2026 has 53 weeks (ISO 8601: weeks start on Monday and week 1 contains the first Thursday of the year).

Is the 2026 calendar the same as 2015?

Yes for the dates: 2015 also started on a Thursday and had 365 days, so every date falls on the same weekday in both years. The bank holidays differ, because Easter and the substitute days move from year to year.

Are school holidays in this calendar?

No. School term and holiday dates are set locally – by councils in England, Scotland and Wales (academies, free schools and some other schools in England set their own) and by each school in Northern Ireland – so check with your council or your child’s school. GOV.UK has a postcode search for term dates in England and Wales.

Can I print the 2026 calendar?

Yes. Free A4 PDFs for England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland: a year planner (landscape), a year calendar (portrait), a half-year calendar and a monthly calendar, with ISO week numbers and every bank holiday written in full.

Sources and method

All sources checked 8 October 2026

Bank holiday dates come from GOV.UK (bank-holidays.json, all three UK regions); the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 and the Royal Proclamations are linked below. The layout, the PDFs, the working days and the long-weekend suggestions are made by ToolNeko: this is not an official publication.

Working days: Monday to Friday minus the bank holidays of the region shown. Week numbers follow ISO 8601: weeks start on Monday and week 1 contains the first Thursday of the year. Long weekends: the fewest days of annual leave that join a bank holiday to a weekend; a longer break with up to 3 days of leave is listed too where it gains more days off than the extra days of leave it takes.

British Summer Time 2026: the clocks go forward 1 hour at 1am on Sunday 29 March 2026 and back 1 hour at 2am on Sunday 25 October 2026 (Summer Time Act 1972, all of the UK).
