ISO week numbers answer a different question
ISO 8601 weeks run Monday through Sunday. Week 1 is the week containing the year's first Thursday. That rule lets some boundary days belong to the neighboring ISO week-numbering year, so an ISO year can have week numbers 1 through 52 or 1 through 53. The calculator shows both systems side by side instead of presenting 53 as an extra seven days inside the calendar year.
When does an ISO year have week 53?
An ISO year has 53 numbered weeks when January 1 falls on Thursday, or when a leap year's January 1 falls on Wednesday. For example, 2026 starts on Thursday, so ISO week 53 runs from December 28, 2026 through January 3, 2027.
