X follows X's published rule: Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters and every emoji count 2, links count 23. Threads and Instagram captions were checked against the real apps on 2026-10-05, and these numbers match them: one emoji can count as several characters (👨👩👧👦 is 7 on Threads and 11 on Instagram), and links count in full. LinkedIn's 3,000 limit was checked on 2026-10-05, but not how LinkedIn counts emoji, so that row compares Characters and is a guide.

How we count
- Words: letters between spaces make one word, so isn't, e-mail and COVID-19 each count as 1. A number such as 2025 or $4.50 counts as 1 word too.
- Characters: every letter, digit, punctuation mark, emoji, space and line break counts as 1. An emoji such as 👍🏽 is 1 character. No spaces leaves out spaces and line breaks.
- Sentences: a sentence ends at . ! or ? followed by a space or the end of a paragraph, or at 。!? in Chinese and Japanese. The decimal point in 4.50, three dots (...) and short forms such as Mr., Dr. and e.g. don't end one. A sentence that really ends with U.S. runs on into the next.
- Paragraphs: a blank line starts a new paragraph; a single line break only starts a new line.
- Chinese, Japanese and Korean: each character counts as 1 word, and their punctuation (such as 、 and 。) separates English words written between them.
For example, “Hello world. This is a test, isn't it? 123 apples cost $4.50.” followed by a blank line and “Second paragraph here.” gives 15 words, 85 characters (13 spaces and 2 line breaks included), 70 without spaces, 4 sentences and 2 paragraphs.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a word counter in Microsoft Word?
Yes. Word shows the word count in the status bar at the bottom of the window. Click it to open Word Count, which lists pages, words, characters with and without spaces, paragraphs and lines; you can also open it from Review > Word Count. To count only part of a document, select that part first. We haven't compared Word with this page item by item, so we don't claim that any number here matches Word's.
How do I turn on word count in Google Docs?
On a computer, open Tools > Word count, or press Ctrl+Shift+C (⌘+Shift+C on a Mac). It lists pages, words, characters and characters excluding spaces. Tick “Display word count while typing” and click OK to keep a running count in the bottom-left corner while you write.
Does Google have a word counter?
Google Docs has one under Tools > Word count, and Google Search sometimes shows a small counter at the top of the results. This page also counts sentences and reading time, checks a target and the X, Threads, Instagram and LinkedIn limits, and keeps your text in your browser.
How long is a 500-word essay?
About one page single-spaced, or two pages double-spaced, in a 12-point font with 1-inch margins. Reading it silently takes about 2 minutes. To track an essay limit, set 500 in the Target tab and choose At least or At most.
What does 200 words look like?
Two or three short paragraphs, a little under half a page single-spaced. It takes under a minute to read. Paste a draft and watch the Words card to see how close you are.
Can ChatGPT count words?
It can give you a number, but it is a chat assistant rather than a counting tool, so check the number before you rely on it, especially for long text. This page counts every word by the fixed rules above, in your browser.
Are line breaks counted?
In Characters, yes: each line break counts as 1 character, like a space. No spaces leaves out both spaces and line breaks, and Words never counts them. The line under the numbers says how many spaces and line breaks Characters includes.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Everything is counted in your browser, and your text isn't sent to ToolNeko or anyone else or put in the page address. Drafts aren't saved unless you turn on “Save a draft on this device” in Details; the draft then stays in this browser (localStorage) until you turn saving off or press Clear.
Privacy
Your text is counted in your browser and never uploaded. Drafts are not saved unless you turn saving on in Details. Your target and the tab you last used are remembered in this browser.
Usage statistics record only actions such as starting to use the tool and which buttons were pressed, never the text, a count or a target. The page may show ads.
