Invisible Character

Tap a labeled card to copy a blank character, such as the Hangul filler (U+3164). Click or tap a card to copy a blank or invisible character. Every card is labeled, because the character itself doesn't show. Start with the Hangul filler ㅤ or the Braille blank ⠀ for a blank-looking name or message.

Cards show a name because the characters are blank. Search by name (zero width, NBSP), use (blank name) or code (U+3164).

Which invisible character should I use?

Hangul filler ㅤ (U+3164) and Braille pattern blank ⠀ (U+2800) are characters with no visible ink, so many text fields treat them as real text instead of empty space. They're a common first choice for a blank-looking name, message or line.

Zero-width characters such as U+200B take up no space at all. They're useful in code and typesetting, but many apps strip or reject them in names. Ordinary spaces are usually trimmed from the start and end of a field.

Platforms change what they allow, and some rules forbid blank or misleading names. Paste into the app's preview first and follow its rules.

How to copy and paste an invisible character

The character you copy can't be seen, so check the copied message after you click.

  1. Click or tap a card, such as Hangul filler, and wait for the copied message.
  2. Paste it into the text field with Ctrl + V, Command + V, or press and hold and choose Paste.
  3. If the field rejects it or trims it, try another character, such as the Braille blank, or paste two in a row.
  4. Preview or save and check the result. If you need to remove it later, clear the field completely.

Spaces for typesetting, code and HTML

Typographic spaces come in fixed widths: an em space (U+2003) is as wide as the font size, an en space (U+2002) half that, and thin and hair spaces narrower still. A no-break space (U+00A0,   in HTML) keeps two words on the same line, and a figure space (U+2007) matches the width of a digit in fonts with fixed-width (tabular) digits, for aligning numbers.

Zero-width characters change how text behaves without adding width. U+200B marks a spot where a long word may break, U+2060 prevents a break, U+200D joins characters, including multi-person emoji such as 👨‍👩‍👧, and U+200C stops two letters from joining in scripts such as Persian. U+FEFF at the start of a file is a byte order mark; elsewhere it can cause bugs.

Accessibility and responsible use

Screen readers may skip invisible characters or read them aloud by name, so a blank name can be confusing for people who use assistive technology. Use them sparingly, and don't use them to slip past filters, pass as someone else, or get around a platform's rules.

Frequently asked questions

How do I copy an invisible character?

Click or tap a labeled card, such as Hangul filler, and wait for the copied message, then paste. The pasted character is blank, so check the result in the app's preview.

What is the best invisible character for a blank name?

The Hangul filler (U+3164) and the Braille blank (U+2800) are good ones to try first because apps usually count them as text. Whether a platform, such as Discord or a game, accepts them in a display name depends on its current rules, so test first. For a styled Discord name instead, try Discord fonts.

Why did my invisible character disappear or get rejected?

Many apps trim spaces and strip zero-width characters, and some block blank names on purpose. Try the Hangul filler or Braille blank instead, or add a visible character.

What is a zero-width space?

U+200B is a character with no width that marks where a line may break. It's invisible and often stripped from names, but it's useful in code, long URLs and typesetting.

How do I type a non-breaking space?

In HTML, write  . On Windows, hold Alt and type 0160 on the numeric keypad; on a Mac, press Option + Space. Word also has Ctrl + Shift + Space on Windows.

Can invisible characters cause problems?

Yes. They can break search, sorting, passwords and code, and screen readers may announce them. Remove them from anything that needs to match exactly, such as usernames you log in with.
