Alphabetizer

Paste one item per line, choose A–Z or Z–A, and sort without rewriting your text.

Predictable natural order: ASCII letters compare without case and digit runs compare as whole numbers. This is not locale-aware dictionary sorting.

Options

Maximum 100,000 UTF-8 bytes and 1,000 lines. Spacing, punctuation, accents, and Unicode form stay unchanged.

Private sorting: text and results stay in this tab. They are not added to the URL, history, storage, cookies, requests, analytics, errors, or console. Analytics receives fixed tool and action identifiers only.

How this alphabetizer orders lines

Each logical line is one item. The comparison folds only ASCII A–Z to lowercase and compares complete ASCII digit runs as nonnegative whole numbers. That gives the predictable order item2, item02, item10: equal numbers use fewer leading zeros first. When comparison keys tie, untouched Unicode scalar values break the tie, and exact duplicate records keep their input order.

Z–A applies that same comparator in the other direction; it does not merely reverse the pasted list. The optional article rule ignores one leading A, An, or The followed by ASCII spaces or tabs for comparison only. The output always retains the original article, case, punctuation, accents, and spacing.

Worked natural-sort example

Paste item10, item02, and item2 on three lines and choose A–Z. The result is item2, item02, item10. With Z–A, it becomes item10, item02, item2.

Exact text, blanks, and duplicate rules

Only line endings are standardized: CRLF and lone CR become LF. There is no trimming, whitespace collapse, punctuation removal, case conversion, accent folding, HTML interpretation, locale collation, or Unicode normalization. Therefore Apple, apple, a leading-space line, and canonically equivalent composed and combining sequences remain distinct.

A final newline creates a final blank record. Remove blank lines drops only exact empty records, while whitespace-only lines stay. Remove exact duplicate lines keeps the first exact record; lines that differ by case, spacing, or Unicode form are not duplicates. Duplicate removal runs before blank removal.

Limits and intended use

The input is limited to 100,000 UTF-8 bytes and 1,000 logical lines. The tool is an English-oriented deterministic line sorter, not language-specific dictionary or linguistic collation. It does not parse last names, format citations or bibliographies, split custom delimiters, transform HTML, process files, save lists, or create share links.

Frequently asked questions

Does this alphabetizer upload or save my text?

No. Sorting and copying run in this browser tab. Text, results, counts, and options are not put in the URL, browser storage, cookies, requests, analytics, errors, or console.

How does the natural A–Z order work?

ASCII letters compare without case, and complete ASCII digit runs compare as whole numbers, so item2 comes before item02 and item10. Exact original text breaks ties and is never rewritten.

Is this dictionary or language-specific sorting?

No. It uses a documented English-oriented technical order, not locale-aware dictionary or linguistic collation. Accents and composed or decomposed Unicode stay distinct.

What does Ignore leading A, An, and The do?

It ignores one leading English article followed by spaces or tabs only while comparing lines. The article and original line remain unchanged in the result.

Do blank lines and spaces count?

Yes. A final newline creates a blank record, and whitespace-only lines remain distinct. Remove blank lines drops only exact empty records; the tool never trims text.

How much text can I sort?

The input accepts at most 100,000 UTF-8 bytes and 1,000 logical lines. These fixed limits keep the browser-only sort bounded.
