Wingdings Translator
Type English text to get copy-and-paste Wingdings symbols, or paste Wingdings symbols to turn them back into English letters.
Font positions, not a language
In the Wingdings font, each keyboard key drew a picture: W was a cross, I a hand, N a skull. The letters were still there underneath, so the text only looked like symbols on computers with that font. Unicode has matching symbols with their own code points: some already existed, and many more were added later. This tool swaps each character for the Unicode symbol linked to its Wingdings position, so the symbols survive copying into chats, documents and social posts.
Where the mapping comes from
The mapping follows section 7 of Unicode/ISO working document N4363 (October 13, 2012), which lists a source ID for every original Wingdings position (the ASCII code plus 1000, so ! is 1033 and ~ is 1126) next to the Unicode code point it corresponds to. It's a published working reference, not a final standard, and it doesn't cover Microsoft's artwork. The 94 printable characters map to 94 different code points, so exact decoding is unambiguous.
Exact matches versus lookalikes
Some symbols look alike but are different characters. The working document maps I to 🖐 (U+1F590) and N to 🕱 (U+1F571), while other tools often use ✋ (U+270B) and ☠ (U+2620). When you decode, those two lookalikes are marked “lookalike, not exact” with the letter they probably mean, and no decoded text is produced until they're replaced. Any other symbol outside the 94 is marked unsupported instead of guessed.

Why your symbols may look different
Each device draws Unicode with its own fonts, and some symbols switch to color emoji. The table lists every code point and its Unicode name, so you can check a result even if a symbol shows as a box. On this page the symbols are drawn with small subsets of the free Noto Sans Symbols fonts (SIL Open Font License; see Noto Sans Symbols and Noto Sans Symbols 2 licenses), not Microsoft's font. The output never adds emoji or text-style selectors; if you paste symbols that carry one, the table notes it.

Frequently asked questions
Is Wingdings a language?
No. Wingdings is a 1990s symbol font: typing a letter in it drew a picture instead of the letter. This tool doesn't translate meaning; it swaps each keyboard character for the Unicode symbol documented for that Wingdings position, so the result can be copied into apps that never had the font.
Why don't the symbols look exactly like the Wingdings font?
The output is Unicode, not the original font. Your device draws each symbol with whatever font it has, and some symbols appear as color emoji. The code point stays the same even when the picture changes, which is why each result lists its U+ code.
Why is 🖐 used for I instead of ✋?
The Unicode working document that maps Wingdings positions assigns I (source 1073) to U+1F590 RAISED HAND WITH FINGERS SPLAYED. U+270B RAISED HAND looks similar but is a different character. Some translators use lookalikes like ✋ for I or ☠ for N, so this tool only decodes the documented code points and marks those two lookalikes as similar, not exact.
Can it decode the Wingdings text in Undertale?
Only if you have the actual Unicode symbols. Gaster's lines in Undertale were drawn in a Wingdings-style font, so screenshots, images or text that relies on a font can't be decoded here. Paste real Unicode symbols, such as ones produced by the Text → Wingdings direction, and exact matches decode back to letters. Gaster's lines use capital letters, and Wingdings draws A and a differently, so type in ALL CAPS to match the game. To read a screenshot by eye, use the full chart on this page as a lookup table.
Does it support Wingdings 2, Wingdings 3 or images?
No. It covers the 94 printable keyboard characters of the original Wingdings font only. Wingdings 2 and 3 use different symbols, and reading symbols from an image would need OCR, which this tool doesn't do.
Why are some characters not converted?
Only printable ASCII (letters, digits and the punctuation on a US keyboard) has a Wingdings position. Spaces and line breaks are kept as they are. Accented letters, curly quotes, tabs and emoji have no mapping, so the tool points them out instead of guessing.
