How to type zodiac symbols
The quickest way on any device is to copy a sign from this page. These built-in options also work.
- iPhone and Android: the emoji keyboard has the zodiac signs as purple emoji; search for the sign's name, such as Leo.
- Windows 10 or 11: press Windows key + . (period) and search the emoji panel for the sign's name.
- Mac: choose Edit > Emoji & Symbols (or press Fn/Globe + E) and search for the sign's name.
- Word for Windows: type the code point, such as 264C for ♌, and press Alt + X.
Zodiac symbols vs zodiac emoji
The same characters can show as plain text symbols (♌) or as colorful emoji tiles (♌️), depending on the app and font. Text symbols follow your font color and size; emoji use each platform's artwork, often a purple square.
If your bio shows the emoji tile when you want a plain symbol, or the other way around, the app or font is choosing the style; the character you copy is the same either way. Advanced tip: adding the invisible selector U+FE0E after a sign asks for the text style and U+FE0F for the emoji style, but apps don't always follow it.
Planet and aspect symbols in astrology
Birth charts use planet symbols such as ☉ Sun, ☽ Moon, ☿ Mercury, ♀ Venus and ♂ Mars. In astrology ☽, ♀ and ♂ stand for the Moon, Venus and Mars, even though their Unicode names are FIRST QUARTER MOON, FEMALE SIGN and MALE SIGN.
Aspects mark the angle between two planets: ☌ conjunction (0°), ☍ opposition (180°), △ trine (120°), □ square (90°), ⚹ sextile (60°), ⚺ semisextile (30°), ⚻ quincunx (150°) and ⚼ sesquisquare, or sesquiquadrate (135°). △ and □ are ordinary geometric shapes used by convention.

Find your birthday in the dates list. For example, July 23 – August 22 is Leo ♌ and February 19 – March 20 is Pisces ♓. If you were born on a cusp day, check a chart for your birth year.
Why does my zodiac sign show as a purple emoji?
Zodiac characters can display as text or as emoji. Many phones and apps show them as purple emoji tiles by default. The copied character is the same; the app decides how it looks.
What do the zodiac symbols represent?
Each glyph is traditionally read as a simple picture of its sign: ♈ the ram's horns, ♉ a bull's head, ♊ the twins, ♋ crab claws, ♌ a lion's mane and tail, ♍ the maiden, ♎ the scales, ♏ a scorpion's stinger, ♐ an archer's arrow, ♑ the sea-goat, ♒ water waves and ♓ two fish.
Are zodiac signs the same as the constellations?
No. Western astrology divides the sky into 12 equal 30° signs tied to the seasons, while the constellations along the ecliptic have unequal sizes, and precession has moved the signs almost a full constellation away from the stars they were named after. The Sun also passes through Ophiuchus, which astrology doesn't use as a sign.
