Why sites list different dates
A sign begins at the moment the Sun reaches the start of it, and that moment shifts by several hours from one year to the next. In 2024 Aries began on March 19 at 11:06 PM EDT; in 2025 it began on March 20 at 5:01 AM EDT. A list that says "Aries: March 21 – April 19" was right in some years up to 1979; since then Aries has begun on March 19 or 20 in Eastern time, a day or two earlier.
The time zone matters too. In 2026 Scorpio began on October 23 at 5:38 AM EDT in New York, which was October 22 at 11:38 PM HST in Honolulu — a day earlier on the calendar. That is why this page asks for the time zone where you were born.
What a cusp day is
A cusp day is the day one sign ends and the next begins. On that day the calculator compares the start of your birth minute with the exact change time in your time zone: before it, you have the earlier sign; at or after it, the later one. If the Sun changed sign during your birth minute, both signs are shown, because birth records only go to the minute.
How the dates are calculated
The signs here are the tropical zodiac: twelve 30° steps of the Sun's path, starting from the March equinox (Aries 0°, Taurus 30°, and so on to Pisces 330°). The time the Sun reaches each step from 1900 to 2100 was calculated with Astronomy Engine and is stored in the page, so lookups work offline and nothing you enter leaves your browser. Times on the page drop the seconds: a change at 12:14:19 PM shows as 12:14 PM.
Frequently asked questions
What are the dates for each zodiac sign?
In most years: Aries March 20 – April 19; Taurus April 20 – May 20; Gemini May 21 – June 20; Cancer June 21 – July 21; Leo July 22 – August 22; Virgo August 23 – September 22; Libra September 23 – October 22; Scorpio October 23 – November 21; Sagittarius November 22 – December 20; Capricorn December 21 – January 19; Aquarius January 20 – February 17; Pisces February 18 – March 19. The first day of a sign can move a day or two earlier or later depending on the year and your time zone; the exact-dates table above shows any year from 1900 to 2100.
What's my zodiac sign if I was born on a cusp?
A cusp day is the day the Sun moves from one sign into the next. You still have one sign: the one the Sun was in at your birth minute. Enter the birth date, time and time zone above and the result shows the exact change time and which side of it you were born on.
Do I need my birth time?
Only if you were born on a cusp day, usually between the 18th and 23rd of a month. On every other day the date alone gives the sign. If you leave the time empty on a cusp day, the result lists both signs and the time the Sun changed sign.
Which time zone should I pick?
The time zone of the place where you were born, not where you live now. The calculator applies that zone's daylight saving rules for your birth year. Most of Arizona doesn't use daylight saving time, so pick Arizona there; the Navajo Nation does, so pick Mountain for a birth there. Older rules weren't the same everywhere in a zone: before 1967 many towns skipped daylight saving time, and most of Indiana stayed on standard time all year from 1971 to 2005. For a birth in one of those places during daylight saving time (roughly April to October) within an hour of the change time, the result can show the wrong sign. For Indiana from 1971 to 2005, choose Central for a birth during those months: its daylight saving clock matched Indiana's standard time.
Is Ophiuchus a 13th zodiac sign?
No. Ophiuchus is a constellation the Sun passes in front of from about November 29 to December 17, but Western astrology's signs are 12 equal 30° sections of the sky measured from the March equinox, not the constellations themselves. The dates on this page are those 12 signs.
Why are my dates different from sidereal (Vedic) astrology?
Sidereal astrology measures the signs against the stars. Because Earth's axis slowly wobbles, the two systems have drifted about 24° apart, so sidereal sign dates come roughly three and a half weeks later — sidereal Aries starts around April 14. This page uses the tropical zodiac found in most Western horoscopes.
Is my sign different in another country?
The Sun enters a sign at the same instant everywhere, so only the local date and time of that moment differ. Someone born on a cusp day abroad may land on the other side of the change. This page covers US time zones only.
