Weather symbols and what they mean
Weather apps and TV forecasts don't share one official set of icons, but most draw the same ideas: a sun for clear skies, a sun partly behind a cloud for partly cloudy, rain falling from a cloud for rain. The table pairs common forecasts with the emoji and text symbols that match them.
| Symbol | Name | Commonly used for |
|---|---|---|
| ☀️ ☀ | Sun | Sunny, clear |
| 🌤️ | Sun behind small cloud | Mostly sunny |
| ⛅ | Sun behind cloud | Partly cloudy |
| 🌥️ | Sun behind large cloud | Mostly cloudy |
| ☁️ ☁ | Cloud | Cloudy, overcast |
| 🌦️ | Sun behind rain cloud | Scattered showers |
| 🌧️ ⛆ | Cloud with rain, rain | Rain |
| ⛈️ ☈ | Cloud with lightning and rain, thunderstorm | Thunderstorms |
| 🌨️ ❄ | Cloud with snow, snowflake | Snow |
| 🌬️ 💨 | Wind face, dashing away | Windy |
| 🌫️ | Fog | Fog, haze |
| 🌪️ | Tornado | Tornado |
| 🌀 | Cyclone | Hurricane, typhoon |
Text weather symbols vs. weather emoji
Several weather symbols come in two forms. ☀ on its own is a text character that takes the color of the text around it. ☀️ is the same character followed by an invisible variation selector (U+FE0F), which asks the device to draw it as a color emoji.
Use the text form in usernames, documents and other places where a color emoji would look out of place, and the emoji form in texts and social posts. Not every app follows the selector, so a text symbol can still show as an emoji on some phones.

What does a 70% chance of rain mean?
The National Weather Service defines the probability of precipitation as the chance that a forecast point gets at least 0.01 inch of rain. So a 70% chance of rain means a 70 percent probability of at least that much rain at the place the forecast is for.
Weather apps usually show that number next to a rain icon or a droplet 💧.
