How to type the degree symbol on your keyboard
The fastest universal option is to copy ° above. If you enter it often, use the shortcut for your device; the character you get should be the Unicode degree sign U+00B0.
- Windows with a numeric keypad: hold Alt, type 0176 on the numeric keypad, then release Alt. The number row above the letters does not work for this Alt code.
- Mac: press Shift + Option + 8 to insert °. You can also open the Character Viewer with Control + Command + Space and search for degree.
- iPhone or iPad: open the number keyboard, press and hold 0, slide to °, and release. Many Android keyboards use the same long-press 0 gesture.
- Microsoft Word: use Alt + 0176 on Windows, or type 00B0 and then press Alt + X. Insert > Symbol is the menu-based alternative.
Use ° for angles, °C or °F for temperature, and K for kelvin
Write an angle with the degree sign directly after the number, such as 45° or 90°. Coordinates can add prime and double-prime for arcminutes and arcseconds, such as 25°03′12″N.
For temperature, °C and °F combine the degree sign with an ordinary C or F. The single characters ℃ and ℉ exist for compatibility, but °C and °F are easier to edit and more widely interoperable. Follow the destination's style guide for spacing before the unit.
Kelvin does not use a degree sign. Write 300 K, not 300°K. In ordinary text, use the keyboard letter K rather than the visually similar Kelvin compatibility character K.
Degree symbol in HTML, Unicode, JavaScript, CSS, and LaTeX
The degree sign is Unicode U+00B0. In HTML, use °, °, or °. JavaScript strings can use \u00B0, and CSS generated content can use the escape \00B0 followed by a space or another character that ends the escape.
In LaTeX math mode, 90^\circ produces a degree mark. For scientific units and consistent spacing, follow the package and publication style used by the rest of your document.
Do not confuse ° with º, ˚, or ∘
° is the degree sign U+00B0. º is the masculine ordinal indicator, ˚ is a ring above, and ∘ is a ring operator. They can look similar at small sizes but are different characters with different meanings.
If a pasted symbol looks wrong, copy ° again and check the destination font. The common degree sign is broadly supported; specialized compatibility and geometry characters may fall back differently.
