State Abbreviations

Find a USPS code from a state name, check a two-letter code, or copy the complete 50-state reference plus DC.

Private lookup: your query, results, result count, and copied text stay in this tab. This tool does not put them in the URL, storage, cookies, network requests, or analytics. Analytics receives only fixed tool, action, error, and related-link identifiers.

Use ASCII letters and spaces. An exact two-letter USPS code takes priority over a name search.

How to use the state abbreviation finder

Type a full or partial state name, such as California or New, or enter a two-letter USPS code such as CA. A two-letter query is checked as a code first. Clear the field to restore all 51 entries.

What the table includes

The reference contains the 50 US states and their USPS two-letter codes. The District of Columbia is included as a separate 51st entry and labeled Federal district, so the table does not describe DC as a state.

What the table leaves out

US territories, freely associated states, and military mail abbreviations are excluded from the primary table. ISO and FIPS identifiers are separate code systems. AP style and traditional state abbreviations may also differ from the two-letter USPS forms shown here.

USPS abbreviation examples

California is CA, New York is NY, Texas is TX, and the District of Columbia is DC. Copy buttons use plain tab-separated text so a row or visible list can be pasted into a spreadsheet or document.

Private, bounded filtering

The query is limited to 40 raw characters and accepts ASCII letters and spaces only. Filtering is local to this tab. The page does not save the query, add it to the address, or transmit the query, results, result count, or copied text.

Frequently asked questions

What are the official two-letter state abbreviations?

The primary table lists the USPS two-letter code for each of the 50 states. The District of Columbia appears separately and is labeled as a federal district.

Is DC a state abbreviation?

DC is the USPS code for the District of Columbia, which is a federal district rather than a state. It is included because it is commonly needed with state-style mailing fields.

Are territories included?

No. The primary table is intentionally limited to the 50 states and the District of Columbia. US territories, freely associated states, and military mail codes have their own USPS entries and are outside this page's table.

Are USPS codes the same as AP abbreviations?

No. USPS codes are fixed two-letter postal abbreviations. AP style and older traditional abbreviations can use different forms, punctuation, or spelling, so this page does not mix them into the USPS table.

Does the search get saved or sent anywhere?

No. Filtering and copying run in this browser tab. The query, results, count, and copied text are not put in the URL, storage, cookies, network requests, or analytics.
