Find a letter’s number or convert a whole message
For a quick lookup, use the A–Z chart above. For a message, enter English letters in Letters → numbers and select Convert. The tool treats uppercase and lowercase letters alike. It puts a hyphen between letter numbers and a slash between words, so ABC XYZ becomes 1-2-3 / 24-25-26.
In Numbers → letters mode, those same groups return ABC XYZ. Spaces, hyphens, and commas separate individual numbers; only the slash marks a word boundary. A line break is treated like a space between number tokens, not automatically as a new word. Keep each value between 1 and 26, or use a leading zero for a single-digit value, such as 01 for A.
Keep letter boundaries when decoding
A separated value such as 12 means L. In Continuous digits mode, the same two digits have two interpretations: 1-2 gives AB, while 12 gives L. For 112, the three possible interpretations are AAB, AL, and KB. The tool does not rank these as English words or select a likely message.
Continuous digits mode takes one sequence of up to 30 digits. It counts all legal splits and lists up to 50, trying a one-digit token before a two-digit token at each step. When there are more, the result clearly says only the first 50 are shown. This display limit does not change the total count.
Match the numbering convention
Other converters may start at A = 0, reverse the alphabet, use fixed two-digit values, or encode word spaces as 0. Check the convention before pasting a result from another tool. This page consistently uses A = 1 through Z = 26 and / for word spaces; it does not silently switch alphabets when a value is invalid.
For example, 10-20 means JT. The continuous sequence 1020 has that same single legal split. A standalone 0 has no letter in this mapping. A zero-padded sequence such as 0102 should be entered as 01-02 in separated mode if you mean AB; continuous mode does not assume fixed-width padding.
Read, select, and reuse the result
Use Select result to highlight the complete converted text, then use your device’s Copy command. The letter–number pairs underneath help you check the conversion; for a long message, this detail view shows the first 100 pairs while the converted result remains complete. The general converter accepts up to 2,000 input characters.
Changing the input or mode clears the old result until you select Convert again. Invalid characters produce an explanation instead of a partial answer. Clear removes the input and result. Conversion runs in your browser, and tool analytics do not include your text, numbers, decoded candidates, or results.
Frequently asked questions
What is the alphabet as numbers?
In A1Z26, the 26 English letters are numbered in order: A is 1, B is 2, and Z is 26. The chart on this page lists every pair. The converter uses this same mapping in both directions.
How do I convert numbers back to letters?
Choose Numbers → letters. Enter numbers from 1 through 26, separated by spaces, hyphens, or commas. Use a slash between words. For example, 8-5-12-12-15 / 23-15-18-12-4 becomes HELLO WORLD. Zero-padded 01 through 09 also work in this separated mode.
Why can 112 have more than one answer?
Without separators, the boundaries are unknown. 112 can be 1-1-2 (AAB), 1-12 (AL), or 11-2 (KB). Continuous digits mode lists valid splits rather than guessing which message was intended. It accepts up to 30 digits and displays the first 50 candidates with an exact total count.
Does 0 mean a space?
Some other tools use 0 as a space code, but this converter uses a slash between words. In Numbers → letters mode, standalone 0 and 27 are rejected. In Continuous digits mode, zero can occur inside 10 or 20 but cannot stand alone or begin a token.
Can I enter punctuation, accented letters, or other alphabets?
Letters → numbers accepts English A–Z, in either case, plus whitespace between words. It rejects other characters instead of silently dropping them. Capitalization and the exact spacing layout are not preserved: output uses uppercase letters and a single space between decoded words.
Is A1Z26 secure encryption?
No. The mapping is fixed and public, so someone who recognizes it can reverse it. Use it for letter-number puzzles, teaching, or casual codes, not to protect passwords or private messages. This page does not guess other cipher systems.
