Malaysia public holidays 2027: questions

How many public holidays are there in Malaysia in 2027?

13 national public holidays apply in every state and federal territory: Chinese New Year (Tahun Baharu Cina), Saturday 6 February; Chinese New Year (second day), Sunday 7 February; Hari Raya Puasa (Eid al-Fitr), Wednesday 10 March; Hari Raya Puasa (second day), Thursday 11 March; Labour Day (Hari Pekerja), Saturday 1 May; Hari Raya Haji (Eid al-Adha), Monday 17 May; Wesak Day, Thursday 20 May; Awal Muharram (Islamic New Year), Sunday 6 June; Official Birthday of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Monday 7 June; Prophet Muhammad's Birthday (Maulidur Rasul), Sunday 15 August; National Day (Hari Kebangsaan), Tuesday 31 August; Malaysia Day, Thursday 16 September; Christmas Day (Hari Krismas), Saturday 25 December. Each state adds its own, so the number of public holiday dates is 18 to 21 depending on the state: Johor 18, Kedah 19, Kelantan 19, Melaka 18, Negeri Sembilan 19, Pahang 18, Penang 19, Perak 18, Perlis 18, Sabah 20, Sarawak 19, Selangor 18, Terengganu 21, Kuala Lumpur 18, Labuan 19, Putrajaya 18. In Perlis two holidays fall on the same day, so it has one holiday more than dates. Replacement days come on top.

Which states have a Friday and Saturday weekend?

Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu rest on Friday and Saturday; Sunday is a working day there. Every other state and the federal territories rest on Saturday and Sunday (the Ministry of Education lists the same two groups for schools). Each state page counts working days and long weekends with its own weekend.

What happens when a public holiday falls on the weekend?

Under the Holidays Act 1951 (section 3), a public holiday on the weekly holiday moves to the next day, or to the day after if that is already a holiday. Sabah's Holidays Ordinance moves a Sunday holiday to the next day; Sarawak's Public Holidays Ordinance to the following Monday. A holiday on a Saturday gets no replacement day. In Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, where Friday is the weekly holiday, any replacement day for a Friday or Saturday holiday is announced by the state, so none is drawn. Replacement days follow from the law and are often not announced separately, so they are dashed here as expected until a notice confirms them.

Which replacement days (cuti ganti) are there in 2027?

Monday 8 February (Chinese New Year), in every state except Johor, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, expected by law; Tuesday 9 February (Chinese New Year), only in Johor, expected by law; Tuesday 1 June (Kaamatan), only in Sabah and Labuan, expected by law; Tuesday 8 June (Awal Muharram), in every state except Kedah, Kelantan, Sarawak and Terengganu, expected by law; Monday 12 July (Hari Hol of Sultan Iskandar), only in Johor, expected by law; Monday 16 August (Maulidur Rasul), in every state except Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, expected by law; Monday 27 December (Isra and Mi'raj), only in Negeri Sembilan and Perlis, expected by law. Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu: none drawn (their weekly holiday is Friday; any replacement day is announced by the state).

When are Hari Raya Puasa, Hari Raya Haji, Chinese New Year and Deepavali in 2027?

Hari Raya Puasa: Wednesday 10 March and Thursday 11 March; Friday 12 March only in Melaka. Hari Raya Haji (Hari Raya Qurban): Monday 17 May; Tuesday 18 May only in Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis and Terengganu. Chinese New Year: Saturday 6 February and Sunday 7 February. Deepavali: Thursday 28 October in every state except Sarawak. The government list marks Awal Ramadan (Monday 8 February), Hari Raya Puasa (Wednesday 10 March and Thursday 11 March), Hari Raya Haji (Monday 17 May and Tuesday 18 May) and Deepavali (Thursday 28 October) «Tertakluk kepada perubahan» (subject to change), so they are dashed here until the date is confirmed. The Islamic dates follow the Keeper of the Rulers' Seal's announcement after the moon sighting and can move by a day.

What are the long weekends (cuti panjang) in 2027?

2 long weekends with the national holidays only: Hari Raya Haji, Sat, 15 May – Mon, 17 May (3 days); Awal Muharram and the Agong's Birthday, Sat, 5 Jun – Mon, 7 Jun (3 days). Each state has more with its own holidays, weekend and replacement days: Johor 6, Kedah 9, Kelantan 9, Melaka 6, Negeri Sembilan 7, Pahang 6, Penang 6, Perak 7, Perlis 5, Sabah 8, Sarawak 6, Selangor 6, Terengganu 10, Kuala Lumpur 7, Labuan 7, Putrajaya 7.

What is a cuti peristiwa?

A cuti peristiwa is a one-off holiday a state declares under the Holidays Act 1951 (section 9), for example for a royal occasion or a sports win, usually at short notice. None is announced for 2027 yet; in 2026 there were 5 (Johor 25 May, Johor 13 July, Negeri Sembilan 3 August, Selangor 1 September, Selangor 25 October). The Labour Department (JTKSM) notes that they are optional for private employers.

Do private sector employees get every public holiday?

In Peninsular Malaysia and Labuan, private employers follow the Employment Act 1955, section 60D. The Labour Department (JTKSM) explains it in its notices: five paid public holidays are compulsory and the employer chooses six more from the gazetted list; a paid holiday that falls on a rest day moves to the next working day, and with the employee's agreement one of the six chosen holidays can be swapped for another day (the five compulsory ones cannot). Special state holidays (cuti peristiwa) are optional for private employers. Sabah and Sarawak have their own labour laws. This calendar shows the public holiday list; your employer's holiday list may differ.

When are the school holidays in 2027?

School holidays are not on this calendar. The Ministry of Education (KPM) publishes them in its school calendar (Kalendar Akademik), which also lists the two weekend groups.

Can I print the 2027 calendar for free?

Yes. Three free A4 PDFs for All of Malaysia and for every state: a year calendar (landscape and portrait) and a monthly calendar of 12 pages, with every holiday written in full and weeks starting on Sunday. The Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu files mark Friday and Saturday as the weekend.

How many working days are there in 2027?

Between 242 and 247 depending on the state (Terengganu 242; Melaka, Pahang, Sarawak and Selangor 247), counting the state's own holidays and replacement days with its weekend. With the national holidays only, Monday to Friday: 254.

Public holiday dates come from the Prime Minister's Department (BKPP) lists for each year and the later federal and state gazettes and notices linked below; replacement days not announced separately are worked out from the Holidays Act 1951 and the Sabah and Sarawak ordinances. The layout, the PDFs, the working-day counts and the long-weekend ideas are made by ToolNeko; this is not a government publication.

Working days: the five days outside the weekend (Monday to Friday; Sunday to Thursday in Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu) minus the public holidays and replacement days of the page; the All of Malaysia page counts the national holidays only. Replacement days (cuti ganti): a holiday on the weekly holiday moves to the next day that is not already a holiday (Holidays Act 1951, section 3); in Sabah a Sunday holiday moves to the next day, and in Sarawak to the following Monday for the days the ordinance's First Schedule lists above its note. Where no notice confirms a replacement day it is dashed as expected. In Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu a holiday on a Friday or Saturday gets a replacement day only if the state announces one, so none is drawn. Some workplaces also work on Saturdays or half days, and private employers follow the Employment Act 1955. Long weekends: three or more days off in a row with a public holiday; leave plans: the fewest leave days that join a holiday to the weekend.
