Hong Kong public holidays 2027: questions
How many public holidays are there in Hong Kong in 2027?
Besides Sundays, 17 public holidays: The first day of January (Friday 1 January), Lunar New Year's Day (Saturday 6 February), The third day of Lunar New Year (Monday 8 February), The fourth day of Lunar New Year (Tuesday 9 February), Good Friday (Friday 26 March), The day following Good Friday (Saturday 27 March), Easter Monday (Monday 29 March), Ching Ming Festival (Monday 5 April), Labour Day (Saturday 1 May), The Birthday of the Buddha (Thursday 13 May), Tuen Ng Festival (Wednesday 9 June), Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day (Thursday 1 July), The day following the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival (Thursday 16 September), National Day (Friday 1 October), Chung Yeung Festival (Friday 8 October), Christmas Day (Saturday 25 December) and The first weekday after Christmas Day (Monday 27 December). The Employment Ordinance has 15 statutory holidays: choose “Statutory holidays” above the calendar.
When is Lunar New Year 2027?
Lunar New Year's Day is Saturday 6 February 2027, the Year of the Goat. The public holidays are Lunar New Year's Day (Saturday 6 February), The third day of Lunar New Year (Monday 8 February) and The fourth day of Lunar New Year (Tuesday 9 February); the second day (Sunday 7 February) is a Sunday, so the fourth day is a holiday instead.
Why is the fourth day of Lunar New Year a holiday in 2027?
Because the second day of Lunar New Year (Sunday 7 February) is a Sunday. The fourth day (Tuesday 9 February) is a general holiday and a statutory holiday in its place.
Is Good Friday 2027 a statutory holiday?
Good Friday (Friday 26 March) and the day following Good Friday are public holidays (banks, schools and government offices close) but not statutory holidays. The statutory holiday at Easter is Easter Monday (Monday 29 March).
Which public holidays fall on a Saturday in 2027?
Lunar New Year's Day (Saturday 6 February), The day following Good Friday (Saturday 27 March), Labour Day (Saturday 1 May) and Christmas Day (Saturday 25 December). No other day is given for a public holiday on a Saturday; only a Sunday holiday moves to the next day.
What is the difference between public holidays and statutory holidays?
Public holidays (general holidays, 17 days) are the days off of banks, schools and government offices. Statutory holidays (15 days) are the holidays every employee is entitled to under the Employment Ordinance. In 2027 only the public holidays include Good Friday (Friday 26 March) and The day following Good Friday (Saturday 27 March). Christmas Day is a public holiday; for statutory holidays the employer chooses the Chinese Winter Solstice Festival or Christmas Day.
What if a statutory holiday falls on a Sunday rest day?
The Labour Department: if a statutory holiday falls on a rest day, a holiday is granted on the day following the rest day which is not a statutory holiday, an alternative or substituted holiday or a rest day. No statutory holiday falls on a Sunday in 2027.
Do foreign domestic helpers get the public holidays?
Foreign domestic helpers are entitled to rest days, the 15 statutory holidays and paid annual leave under the Employment Ordinance and the Standard Employment Contract (Labour Department). The other public holidays (for example Good Friday) are days off only if the employer agrees. An employer who needs a helper to work on a statutory holiday must give at least 48 hours’ notice and an alternative holiday within 60 days; paying instead of the holiday is not allowed.
Can I print the 2027 calendar?
Yes. Free A4 PDFs for the public holidays and the statutory holidays: a year calendar (landscape with a Sunday or Monday start, and portrait) and a monthly calendar, with every holiday written in full; a set with the lunar dates too.
Sources and method
All sources checked 20 October 2026.
Holiday dates come from GovHK (general holidays), the 1823 holiday calendar file and the Labour Department (statutory holidays); the lunar dates and solar terms from the Hong Kong Observatory’s conversion tables. The layout, the PDFs, the working days and the leave plans are made by ToolNeko: this is not a government publication.
Working days: Monday to Friday minus the holidays of the view that fall on a weekday. Statutory holidays: the employer chooses the Chinese Winter Solstice Festival or Christmas Day, counted once; working days and leave plans use the earlier day. A statutory holiday on a Sunday gives employees whose rest day is Sunday a day off on the next day that is not a statutory holiday or a rest day (counted on this page). Long weekends and leave plans assume Saturday and Sunday off.
Lunar dates and solar terms in Hong Kong time (Hong Kong Observatory). Lunar New Year's Day 2027: Saturday 6 February 2027.
The 2028 public holidays are usually gazetted in the middle of 2027; the 2028 calendar is added then.
