How to find a five-letter word

Enter any filters you know, then choose Find words. Starts with and Ends with match exact letter sequences. Contains all matches the requested letters in any order and respects repeats: entering ee requires two e letters. Excluded letters removes any word containing one of those letters.

The position pattern must have exactly five characters. Write a letter where its position is known and ? anywhere it is unknown. For example, c?a?e fixes c first, a third, and e fifth. Filters combine with AND. If two filters demand different letters in one position, or require and exclude the same letter, the finder explains the conflict instead of showing stale results.

    What the 5,100-word list contains

This is a curated US English profile generated from SCOWL/English Speller Database release rel-2026.02.25 at commit 7e99edab8e32f9f9ea2b15f249ca8d4d67237410. It includes SCOWL size 60 or smaller, American and neutral spellings, and variant level 1 or lower. Every shipped entry is exactly five lowercase ASCII letters.

The build excludes abbreviations, special categories, known person, surname, place, name, demonym, trademark, uppercase, and tentative name or abbreviation classes. It also excludes entries marked with SCOWL offensive or vulgar usage notes. SCOWL says its class and usage-note coverage is incomplete, so this list is not exhaustive, is not a family-safe guarantee, and may still contain a name or sensitive word. Accented forms, apostrophes, hyphens, spaces, digits, and uppercase abbreviations are outside this version.

    Result order and display limit

Results use documented SCOWL coverage tiers: core (size 35 or smaller), standard (sizes 36–50), then broader dictionary (sizes 51–60). Words are alphabetical inside each tier. These tiers are not a current-use frequency ranking and do not claim that one result is more popular than another today.

The page searches all 5,100 words for every valid request. To keep a large result usable, it renders at most the first 500 and states both the full match count and the visible count. Copy visible results copies only the words currently rendered, one per line.

    Browser-only privacy and scope

The versioned word list ships with this static page and all filtering happens in memory after it loads. The tool makes no fetch, XHR, WebSocket, beacon, worker, or other application request with letters or results. It does not put filters or results in local storage, session storage, IndexedDB, cookies, query parameters, or URL fragments. Measurement is limited to which filter types were active and a coarse result-count bucket; it never includes letters, words, exact result counts, or the copied list.

This finder is not an official Wordle, Scrabble, crossword, or anagram dictionary. It does not score guesses, suggest an optimal move, make words from a rack, rank by current frequency, define words, inflect words, query a live dictionary, save searches, or share filter URLs. Each game or publisher can accept a different vocabulary.

    Reproducible source profile

The canonical newline-delimited output has 5,100 records, 30,600 bytes, and SHA-256 b3f717c61907e0c64d62c9cd7976d3739005e7ce984fa117d488231d5d8ef988. A deterministic gzip -n -9 stream is 13,093 bytes. ToolNeko preserves the applicable SCOWL copyright and permission text in its public third-party notice. Source upgrades are manual and require new hashes, a word diff, license review, and fixture review.

    Frequently asked questions

How many five-letter words are in this finder?

The frozen US English profile contains exactly 5,100 lowercase ASCII words. A blank search reports that full total and renders the first 500, while filters narrow the same local list.

Can I combine starts, contains, ends, excluded, and position filters?

Yes. Every active filter applies at once. Contains all treats repeated letters as repeated requirements, and the five-position pattern uses a letter for a fixed spot or ? for any letter.

Is this an official Wordle, Scrabble, or game list?

No. It is a curated SCOWL US English dictionary profile. Individual games use their own answer and guess lists, so check that game's rules before relying on a result.

Are the first results the most popular words today?

No. Results use three documented SCOWL coverage tiers, then alphabetical order. Those tiers are dictionary coverage bands, not a current frequency score or popularity ranking.

Are all results family-safe and are all proper names removed?

No. Marked offensive and vulgar entries and known proper-name classes are excluded, but SCOWL documents that those classifications are incomplete. Review a result for your audience.

Are my letter filters uploaded or saved?

No. Filtering uses a bundled static list in this browser. The tool does not place letters or results in the URL, browser storage, cookies, or a ToolNeko application request.
