Time Calculator
Find elapsed time, subtract breaks, total several intervals, or add and subtract durations.
Time between two clock times
The calculator subtracts the start from the end, then subtracts the break for that interval. If the end is earlier than the start, it adds one day before calculating the difference. That overnight rule makes 10:00 PM to 2:30 AM equal 4 hours 30 minutes, while matching start and end times stay blocked because they could mean either zero or 24 hours.
Common time calculations
| Input | Result | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 9:30 AM–6:30 PM, 60 min break | 8 hr 0 min | 9 hours less 1 hour |
| 22:00–02:30, 30 min break | 4 hr 0 min | 4.5 hours overnight less 30 minutes |
| 2h 30m + 45m − 20m | 2 hr 55 min | Add 45 minutes, then subtract 20 minutes |
Hours, minutes, seconds, and decimal hours
One hour contains 60 minutes and one minute contains 60 seconds. Decimal hours divide the total seconds by 3,600, so 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5 hours. A display such as 7.30 hours means 7 hours 18 minutes, not 7 hours 30 minutes.
The result keeps an hours-and-minutes form beside decimal hours and total minutes. For multiple intervals, it also provides a row-by-row receipt so you can see which spans crossed midnight and how much break time was removed.
What this calculator does not decide
This page calculates elapsed time and duration arithmetic. It does not decide paid versus unpaid breaks, overtime eligibility, payroll rounding, time zones, daylight-saving transitions, or calendar-date differences. Use the Clock Out Time Calculator for alternating IN and OUT records, and the Date Calculator for calendar dates.
Input limits and privacy
You can calculate up to 100 time intervals or 50 duration terms at once. Breaks must be whole minutes and shorter than their interval. Duration expressions accept days, hours, minutes, seconds, and hour-minute forms such as 1:30. All inputs stay in the current browser tab and are cleared when you leave or reload the page.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the time between two times?
Enter the start and end time. The calculator converts both to elapsed seconds, treats an earlier end time as the next day, subtracts the optional break, and then formats the difference.
Can I use AM/PM and 24-hour time?
Yes. Inputs such as 9:30 AM, 6:30 PM, 09:30, and 18:30 are accepted. You can also include seconds, such as 9:30:15 AM.
How does the calculator handle an overnight time range?
When the end time is earlier than the start time, the end is treated as occurring on the next day. For example, 10:00 PM to 2:30 AM is 4 hours 30 minutes before any break is subtracted.
Why can’t the start and end time be the same?
Matching clock times could mean zero time or a full 24 hours. The calculator does not guess. Enter a shorter interval or split a full day into separate intervals.
How do I add or subtract hours and minutes?
Choose Add or subtract, then enter an expression such as 2h 30m + 45m - 20m. You can use days, hours, minutes, seconds, or colon durations such as 1:30 for 1 hour 30 minutes.
Can I total several time intervals?
Yes. Add up to 100 intervals. Each interval can have its own start time, end time, and break. The total is calculated only after every entered row is valid.
Does this page calculate wages or overtime rules?
No. It performs time arithmetic only. It does not decide whether a break is paid, apply overtime rates, or interpret employment rules.
Are my times uploaded or saved?
No. The calculations run in your browser. Analytics records only bounded tool events such as a successful calculation, never the times, breaks, expression, or result.
