Controlled frequency sweep

Play a low-gain 8-second sweep from 100 Hz to 10 kHz through both channels.

This checks the browser-to-output path. Mono audio, balance settings, Bluetooth processing, and the speakers or headphones themselves can change what you hear. It is not a hearing or calibration test.

Test both speakers before checking the channels

Start with the 440 Hz tone through both channels. If you hear nothing, confirm that the browser tab is not muted, select the intended output in your operating system, and check the device connection. Then play Left and Right separately. Each channel button replaces any sound already playing, so two test sources never overlap.

How to read the left and right sound test

When Play left is active, the tone should come mainly from the left side of a stereo output; Play right should move it to the right. Play both centers the same mono test source across the stereo output. On a mono device or with mono audio enabled, all three may sound centered. Operating-system balance settings, Bluetooth processing, adapters, and speaker wiring can also affect the result.

Use the sweep for obvious playback changes

The sweep moves gradually from 100 Hz to 10 kHz over eight seconds at a lower gain than the channel tone. It can help you notice a missing band, rattling, or a sudden change in your current setup. Perceived loudness will vary across the sweep and does not by itself show a fault.

The browser generates one sine-wave source with the Web Audio API. A gain ramp softens its start and end, and a stereo panner sends the source left, right, or to both channels. The page does not measure what reaches your ears, so it cannot certify hearing, frequency response, calibration, polarity, latency, or surround channels.

If one side is silent

  1. Keep the volume low, then make sure the correct speakers or headphones are selected.
  2. Check the left/right balance and mono-audio accessibility settings in your operating system.
  3. Reconnect wired plugs or Bluetooth, then reload the page and test Both, Left, and Right again.
  4. Try another browser or device to separate a browser setting from an output-device problem.

What does the frequency sweep tell me?

It can reveal obvious dropouts or changes as your current browser and output chain plays from 100 Hz to 10 kHz. Loudness naturally changes with speakers, headphones, the room, and human hearing. The sweep is not a hearing test, calibration, or proof of a device's full frequency response.

Why does the test stop when I change tabs?

Stopping on a hidden tab prevents a tone or sweep from continuing when its controls are no longer visible. Return to the page and press a Play button to start again.
