Use one convention consistently

This tool writes text across rows and reads down columns. Set the same number of columns for encoding and decoding. Other Scytale tools may describe the key as turns, circumference, or letters per turn, so compare the actual grid instead of trusting the label alone.

Inspect every character move

The wrap grid labels each source and result position. Focus or tap a cell to highlight where that character appears in the output. A shorter last row remains reversible without padding.

Treat padding as explicit data

Optional padding is visually marked when this page adds it. When decoding supplied ciphertext, every character is preserved. Remove a final padding character only when the sender or puzzle rules identify it.

A Scytale is a historical transposition cipher. It rearranges characters but does not provide modern confidentiality, authentication, or resistance to automated analysis. Use it for demonstrations and puzzles only.

How does this Scytale cipher work?

This page uses one explicit convention: write plaintext left to right across rows, then read the grid from top to bottom by columns. Decoding reverses that same layout.

What does the column key mean?

Columns are the number of character positions around the digital wrap. Try the same value used by the sender; a different value produces a different arrangement.

Should I add padding?

Padding makes a complete rectangle but is optional. Added cells are visibly marked. The decoder never removes a trailing X or other character because ciphertext alone cannot prove that it was padding.

Can a Scytale cipher protect private information?

No. It is an ancient transposition method suitable for learning and puzzles, not modern secure encryption. Do not use it to protect passwords, personal records, or confidential messages.
