Online Grader Calculator for Test Scores
Work out the percentage for one quiz or test from points earned or the number wrong, or paste a list of anonymous scores that share the same total. If every question is worth one point, enter questions as points. See exactly how rounding and your own cutoff affect each result.
Grade one quiz or test from points. You'll see the exact percentage, the rounded percentage you'd show, and how your own cutoff treats each. There's no built-in letter-grade scale.

How it was calculated
A school's letter grade can use different cutoffs or rounding. This tool only compares with the cutoff you enter.
Scores and cutoffs stay in this browser tab. Do not paste names or student IDs. Copy or download only when you choose.
Two examples
33 out of 40: 33 ÷ 40 × 100 = 82.5% exactly, which displays as 83% when rounded to a whole number. The same score entered as 7 wrong out of 40 gives the same result.
179 out of 200 with a 90% cutoff: the exact percentage is 89.5% and the displayed one is 90%. Comparing the exact percentage, the score is below 90%; comparing the displayed percentage, it meets 90%. The calculator shows both and labels the policy you chose.
Earned points versus wrong points
Enter what the student earned, or switch to wrong points and enter what they missed. Earned points are the total minus wrong points. Half and quarter points work, such as 17.5 or 0.25, up to two decimal places.
Exact, displayed and your cutoff
The exact percentage is kept as a fraction, so a result like 1 out of 3 is shown as 100/3% (about 33.333333%) instead of being cut short and called exact. The displayed percentage is rounded half up to a whole number, one decimal or two decimals, whichever you choose. When you enter a cutoff, the result says whether the exact percentage and the displayed percentage each meet it, and which one your policy uses. Setting a cutoff of 90.01 is compared as 90.01, never quietly rounded to 90.
Pasting a list of anonymous scores
Paste earned points one per line, for up to 100 scores that are all out of the same total. Duplicates stay as separate rows and the order you pasted is kept. A line with a name, a slash fraction such as 33/40, or anything else that isn't a plain number is flagged with its line number, and the other lines are still graded. Over 100 scores or 10 KB, nothing is calculated and you're asked to split the list; nothing is silently cut off.
Copying and the CSV file
Copy results copies the table as tab-separated text (TSV), which pastes into a spreadsheet as columns. Download .csv saves a file with the line number, earned points, total, calculation, decimal percentage, displayed percentage, cutoff, the exact and displayed status, and any error code for each row. Every cell is a number, a fixed word or a fixed code, so nothing you pasted can turn into a spreadsheet formula.
What this calculator doesn't do
It doesn't know your school's grading scale, assign letter grades, weight categories, calculate course averages or GPA, or keep a gradebook. To turn course letter grades into a high school GPA, use the separate GPA calculator linked below.
Privacy

Frequently asked questions
How do I grade a test from the number wrong?
Choose "Wrong points", enter the total points and the points missed. Earned points are the total minus the wrong points, so 7 wrong out of 40 is 33 earned and 82.5%. If every question is worth one point, points and questions are the same thing.
Why does 179 out of 200 show 90%?
179 ÷ 200 × 100 is exactly 89.5%. Rounded to a whole number, half up, that displays as 90%. The calculator shows both numbers, so you can see that the displayed 90% came from rounding.
Which percentage does my cutoff use?
You choose. "Compare exact percentage" checks the full, unrounded fraction, so 89.5% is below a 90% cutoff. "Compare displayed percentage" checks the rounded number you'd show, so 90% meets it. The result shows both and marks the one you picked. A score equal to the cutoff meets it, and the cutoff itself is never rounded.
Why might my school's letter grade be different?
There's no single US grading scale. Schools and teachers set their own letter cutoffs, rounding rules, weighting and extra-credit policies. This tool only works out percentages and compares them with the one cutoff you enter; it doesn't assign letter grades.
How do I grade a list of scores at once?
Choose "Paste anonymous scores", enter the total points, and paste earned points one per line (up to 100 lines, all out of the same total). Blank lines are skipped, rows stay in the order pasted, and a line that isn't a number is flagged with its line number while the other lines are still calculated. Don't paste names or student IDs.
Are the scores uploaded or saved?
No. Scores, totals and cutoffs stay in this browser tab. They aren't put in the page address, saved in the browser or sent in analytics. Copying or downloading a CSV happens only when you click, and the file contains only parsed numbers, fixed status words and error codes, never names or other text you pasted.
