How to add or remove GST/HST

Adding tax: multiply the price before tax by each rate, round each tax to the cent and add them to the price. In Ontario, $1,234.00 plus 13% HST is $160.42 of HST, $1,394.42 in total. In Quebec, the same price gives $61.70 of GST (5%) and $123.09 of QST (9.975%), $1,418.79 in total.

Removing tax: divide the total by 1 plus the combined rate (1.13 in Ontario, 1.12 in British Columbia, 1.14975 in Quebec) to get the price before tax, then work each tax out again from that price. $1,394.42 in Ontario and $1,418.79 in Quebec both come from $1,234.00 before tax.

Because each tax is rounded to the cent, some totals cannot come from any price before tax. In Ontario, $88.49 plus HST is $99.99 and $88.50 plus HST is $100.01, so no price gives exactly $100.00; the calculator then shows the closest price and says the total is a cent off. The CRA's own calculator warns that results may differ from final totals by a cent or two.

GST/HST and provincial sales tax by province and territory

The rates the calculator uses, as the CRA lists them:

  • Alberta, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon: 5% GST only
  • British Columbia: 5% GST + 7% PST
  • Manitoba: 5% GST + 7% RST (retail sales tax)
  • Saskatchewan: 5% GST + 6% PST
  • Quebec: 5% GST + 9.975% QST, 14.975% in total
  • Ontario: 13% HST
  • Nova Scotia: 14% HST (15% before April 1, 2025)
  • New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island: 15% HST

HST, or GST plus a provincial tax?

The HST combines the GST and a provincial part in one tax, so a receipt in Ontario or the Atlantic provinces shows one HST line at the total rate; the CRA tells businesses not to show the federal and provincial parts separately. In British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec the GST and the provincial tax are two lines, and Manitoba calculates its RST on the selling price before GST.

Most goods and services are taxed at these rates, but not all. Zero-rated supplies have a 0% GST/HST rate across Canada (basic groceries, for example), some supplies are exempt, and provincial sales taxes such as British Columbia's PST have exemptions of their own. Check how tax applies to what you sell with the CRA and your province.

GST/HST calculator questions

How do I calculate GST/HST from a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate: by 1.13 for Ontario's 13% HST, by 1.05 for 5% GST. The result is the price before tax, and the tax is the difference. For example, $1,394.42 ÷ 1.13 = $1,234.00 before tax and $160.42 of HST. Choose Remove tax above to do it for any province or territory.

Is HST 13%, 14% or 15%?

It depends on the province: 13% in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia (since April 1, 2025) and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island. The other provinces and the territories charge the 5% GST, plus their own sales tax in British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec.

Is GST 5% or 7%?

The GST is 5% everywhere in Canada. British Columbia and Manitoba add a 7% provincial sales tax (PST, RST) on top of it, for 12% in total.

What is the sales tax in Quebec?

5% GST plus 9.975% QST, 14.975% in total. On $100.00 that is $5.00 of GST and $9.98 of QST, so $114.98. The QST is administered by Revenu Québec.

How do I calculate GST and PST backwards?

Divide the total by 1 plus both rates together: by 1.12 in British Columbia and Manitoba (5% + 7%), by 1.11 in Saskatchewan (5% + 6%). Then work each tax out on that price. For example, $112.00 in British Columbia is $100.00 before tax, $5.00 of GST and $7.00 of PST.

Why is my receipt a cent different?

Rounding. This calculator rounds each tax to the nearest cent on its own, with half a cent rounded up. A store that rounds per item or on the combined rate can be a cent off, and some totals cannot be reached from any price before tax. The CRA notes that results may differ from final totals by a cent or two.

Are my amounts saved or sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser. Amounts are not put in the page address or in analytics, which only count actions such as choosing a province or switching between adding and removing tax.
