Formula and calculation
All volume units
Each measurement can use a different unit. Calculations run in your browser; dimensions are not sent to analytics.
Choose the shape and its measurements
Volume measures three-dimensional space. Select the solid that matches your object, then enter the labeled lengths. For a box, use its three perpendicular edges. For a circular solid, check whether your measurement crosses the whole circle or goes from its center to the edge.
| Shape | Volume formula |
|---|---|
| Rectangular prism | V = l × w × h |
| Cube | V = s³ |
| Cylinder | V = πr²h |
| Cone | V = πr²h ÷ 3 |
| Sphere | V = 4πr³ ÷ 3 |
| Hemisphere | V = 2πr³ ÷ 3 |
| Rectangular pyramid | V = l × w × h ÷ 3 |
| Triangular prism | V = b × h × l ÷ 2 |
| Cone frustum | V = πh(R² + Rr + r²) ÷ 3 |
Here, l is length, w is width, h is perpendicular height, s is a cube’s side, and r is radius. For a triangular prism, b and h describe its triangular end; l measures between the two ends. In the frustum formula, R and r are the radii of the two circular ends.
Example: a box with mixed units
A box measures 2 m long, 3 m wide, and 400 cm high. Convert 400 cm to 4 m, then multiply: 2 × 3 × 4 = 24 m³. That is 24,000 liters or 24,000,000 cm³. Use the example button to load these measurements, then choose Calculate volume.
Why cubic units need a different conversion
A meter contains 100 centimeters, but a cubic meter contains 100 × 100 × 100 = 1,000,000 cubic centimeters. Convert each length before multiplying, or apply the cubic conversion factor to the finished volume. Multiplying a volume by 100 would give the wrong result.
Measure height perpendicular to the base
The height of a cone or pyramid runs perpendicular to its base. A sloping edge is longer and cannot replace that height in the formula. For a triangular prism, the triangle’s height and the prism’s length are separate measurements.
Precision and scope
Enter positive plain decimals up to 1,000,000, with at most six decimal places. Fractions, commas, scientific notation, zero, and negative lengths are not accepted. Results use floating-point arithmetic and are displayed to ten significant digits; they do not establish the accuracy of your measurements.
This tool calculates one complete geometric solid at a time. It does not combine solids, subtract cutouts, account for material density, or model a partly filled tank. A cone frustum requires two positive circular radii; select Cone when one end comes to a point.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate volume from length, width, and height?
For a rectangular prism, multiply length × width × height after converting every measurement to the same unit. For example, 2 m × 3 m × 400 cm becomes 2 × 3 × 4 = 24 m³.
Can I mix inches, feet, centimeters, and meters?
Yes. Choose a separate unit beside each measurement. The calculator converts all lengths to meters before applying the shape formula, then converts the volume to your selected result unit.
Should I enter radius or diameter?
Choose Radius or Diameter for a sphere, hemisphere, cylinder, cone, or cone frustum. Diameter is twice the radius. Changing this setting clears the measurements so a radius is not silently reused as a diameter.
Are liters and cubic centimeters the same?
No. One liter is 1,000 cubic centimeters. One milliliter equals one cubic centimeter. The results distinguish cubic length units from liters and milliliters.
Which gallon does the calculator use?
It offers both US liquid gallons and Imperial gallons, labeled separately. One US liquid gallon is 3.785411784 liters; one Imperial gallon is 4.54609 liters.
Can this calculate weight or the liquid in a partly filled tank?
No. It calculates the geometric volume of a complete solid. Weight also needs density, and partially filled tanks need shape-specific fill calculations. For container capacity, use internal dimensions; wall thickness is not deducted.
