Private calculation: entries and results stay in this tab. The calculator uses no storage, uploads, account, permissions, or result network request. Analytics receives only the selected input modes, action name, and fixed error category.
Use the product label that you actually have
Printed-coverage mode treats the carton label's square-foot coverage as the product input. Tile-size mode uses tile width × tile length ÷ 144 to find nominal square feet per tile, then uses the whole piece count per carton. Printed coverage can account for packaging details that nominal face dimensions do not, so do not mix the two modes into one result.
How the tile calculator rounds cartons
For a rectangular surface, base area is length × width. The allowance target is base area × (1 + your allowance percentage). Tile-size mode rounds base tile need and allowance tile need upward, then rounds the target up again to whole cartons. Printed-coverage mode divides the exact allowance target by the label coverage and rounds up once to whole cartons.
Every decimal stays an exact fraction through the calculation. The calculator applies ceilings to unrounded values, so an exact 10-carton boundary stays 10 instead of moving to 11 because of binary floating-point error. Display rounding never feeds back into the next step.
Read the three planning quantities separately
Measured/base need comes from the surface dimensions or square footage. Your allowance target adds only the percentage you entered. Carton-rounding overage is additional material beyond that target because a partial carton cannot be purchased. The calculator never calls the combined difference “spare” or recommends a universal waste percentage.
Planning boundary
This is a nominal-area and whole-carton planning estimate for one surface. It does not design a row or column layout, place grout joints, calculate cuts, optimize offcuts, subtract openings, combine shower walls, model diagonal or patterned installations, predict breakage, or guarantee enough material. Verify current product-label coverage and installer or manufacturer requirements before purchase.
The optional price is a carton material subtotal only. Sales tax, labor, adhesive, grout, delivery, returns, stock, dye lots, and local availability are outside the calculation. No project is saved and no supplier is contacted.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate how many cartons of tile I need?
Enter the square footage of one surface, or its length and width. Then use either the square feet printed on one carton or the tile dimensions plus whole tiles per carton. Choose your own allowance, and the calculator rounds the final purchase up to whole cartons.
What is the difference between allowance and carton overage?
Allowance is the extra amount you choose before carton rounding. Carton overage is material added afterward only because stores sell whole cartons. The receipt reports them separately so carton rounding is not mislabeled as waste or spare tile.
Should I use tile size or printed carton coverage?
Use printed square feet per carton when the product label provides it. Tile-size mode uses nominal face area and whole pieces per carton; it does not model grout lines, layout, cuts, pattern rotation, or reusable offcuts.
What allowance percentage should I enter?
The calculator starts at 0% because no percentage fits every product and installation. Enter the amount you have chosen after checking the pattern, product guidance, site conditions, and installer or manufacturer requirements.
Does the price include tax, labor, or delivery?
No. Optional price multiplies whole cartons by the exact price per carton you enter. It excludes sales tax, labor, delivery, adhesive, grout, returns, and every other project cost.
Does this calculator save or send my project?
No. The calculation runs in this browser tab without storage, uploads, accounts, or result network requests. Analytics receives only fixed categories such as the selected input mode, action, and error type—not dimensions, area, price, or results.
