Convert and scale a recipe amount in one step

US: teaspoons = tablespoons × 3. To go from tsp to tbsp, divide by 3. For Australian measuring spoons, multiply or divide by 4 instead. A teaspoon in the Australian setting is 5 mL and a tablespoon is 20 mL; the US setting does not treat US spoons as exactly 5 mL or 15 mL.

If a recipe calls for 1½ US tablespoons and you are making half, enter 1½ and choose Half: 1½ × ½ × 3 = 2¼ US teaspoons. Double gives 9 US teaspoons. These choices always start from the amount you typed; they do not repeatedly scale an earlier answer.

The answer stays an exact, reduced fraction instead of rounding away amounts such as ⅓ tablespoon. Swap uses that exact answer as the new input and resets the scale. Copy result preserves the original amount, scale and named spoon system so the result still makes sense in your recipe notes.

Method and limits

Calculations use exact integer fractions and the same-system ratios above, not approximate metric equivalents. Enter nonnegative amounts with up to 6 decimal places, simple or mixed fractions, or common fraction characters. An optional tbsp, tablespoon, tablespoons, tsp, teaspoon or teaspoons suffix selects the direction. Other units and scientific notation are not accepted.

The input, scaled recipe amount and answer must each be no more than 1,000,000 spoons. Fraction denominators are limited to 1,000,000,000 and input text to 64 characters. A result outside these limits shows an error, never a silently rounded answer. Use level measuring spoons for recipes; this page does not convert ingredient weights or provide medicine doses.

Frequently asked questions

How many teaspoons are in a tablespoon?

One US tablespoon equals exactly 3 US teaspoons. An Australian tablespoon is 20 mL, so it equals 4 Australian teaspoons of 5 mL each. Choose the system used by your recipe; changing the setting reinterprets your amount in that system, rather than converting between US and Australian spoons.

How many teaspoons are in half a tablespoon?

Half a US tablespoon is 1 1/2 US teaspoons; a quarter US tablespoon is 3/4 US teaspoon. In Australia, half a 20 mL tablespoon is 2 teaspoons, and a quarter tablespoon is 1 teaspoon.

How do I convert tsp to tbsp?

Divide US teaspoons by 3, or Australian teaspoons by 4. For example, 1 US teaspoon is exactly 1/3 US tablespoon. Choose tsp in From, or paste a quantity such as 1 tsp. Swap moves the exact answer into the input and resets the recipe scale to Original.

Can I halve or double an amount written as a fraction?

Yes. Enter a fraction such as 1/2, 1 1/2, ½ or 1½, then choose Half or Double. For example, half of 1 1/2 US tablespoons is 2 1/4 US teaspoons. Scaling always uses the original amount in the input, so pressing Double twice does not quadruple it. Copy result includes the original amount, scale, system and exact answer.

Can I use an ordinary spoon, or convert grams with this tool?

Use level measuring spoons, not household cutlery of an unknown size. Tablespoons and teaspoons measure volume; grams measure weight, so a weight conversion needs an ingredient-specific density. This tool is for recipes, not medicine dosing.
