Paver Calculator

Plan the field, border course, repeating pattern, and package rounding in one material receipt.

Project in feet; pavers and layers in inches.

Package or pallet rounding

Enter the label from the product you plan to buy. Price is used only with a package size.

Soldier uses the paver length as the border depth. Available for rectangles only.

Editable material layers

The calculator measures volume from depths you enter; it does not choose a structural base.

Your dimensions, pattern, package sizes, prices, and results stay in this page. They are not added to the URL, history, storage, cookies, requests, or analytics.

Start with the area the paver faces must cover

Use rectangle mode when you know project length and width. Use known area when another plan already gives you square feet or square meters. The calculator works from the visible face dimensions of the paver. Confirm whether a product listing includes a spacer or joint convention before copying dimensions from a catalog.

Keep the field and border as separate orders

A rectangular border reduces the inner field area. Soldier orientation uses the border paver's long side as the band depth; sailor orientation uses its short side. The result lists field and border pieces separately, so each may have a different waste percentage, package size, and price. Corners, joints, edge restraint, and actual cuts still depend on the chosen layout.

Buy complete mixed-pattern sets

For a repeating pattern, describe one set: each face size and how many pieces of that size appear. The engine adds the exact covered area of the set, rounds the project up to a whole set, applies waste to whole sets, and then expands the order back into the count for every size. Package rounding happens after that piece count and remains visible rather than silently changing the waste assumption.

Read package extras separately from waste

Waste covers cutting and breakage using the percentage you enter. Package extras are the difference between that order quantity and the next whole package or pallet. Keeping the two figures separate helps you compare products with different pack sizes without treating every leftover piece as construction waste.

Base and bedding are volume checks, not design advice

Enter a layer depth only when your project plan supplies one. CMHA describes a nominal 1 inch (25 mm) bedding layer, so that value is the editable starting point. Base thickness depends on the application, subgrade, climate, loading, drainage, and local practice; this page intentionally leaves it blank. The result does not include compaction factors, delivery minimums, labor, tax, or live product prices.

How the calculator keeps the arithmetic auditable

All accepted decimal inputs become reduced BigInt rational values. Area, unit conversion, pattern coverage, border geometry, and layer volume stay exact until display. The engine rounds upward only when a real purchase boundary requires a whole paver, complete pattern set, package, or pallet.

Limits of the estimate

This calculator does not design pavement, choose structural depth, evaluate soil, frost, drainage, or vehicle load, optimize cuts, draw the pattern, or validate a manufacturer's layout. Confirm face dimensions, joint treatment, pattern, layer design, allowance, package count, and ordering terms with the product manufacturer and supplier.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how many pavers I need?

Divide the field area by the face area of one paver, round up to a whole paver, and then apply the waste percentage you choose. For repeating patterns, this calculator divides by one complete pattern-set area and rounds waste at the complete-set boundary.

How many 4 × 8 inch pavers cover a 12 × 10 foot patio?

The 120 ft² patio needs 540 pavers before waste because each 4 × 8 inch face covers 32 in². At 10% waste, the calculator rounds the order estimate to 594 pavers before package rounding.

What is the difference between a soldier and sailor border?

In this estimate, a soldier course points the long side of the rectangular border paver inward, so its length sets the band depth. A sailor course follows the edge with the long side, so its width sets the band depth. Confirm the actual corner and joint layout before ordering.

Can I calculate a mixed-size paver pattern?

Yes. Enter up to four paver sizes and the number of each used in one repeating set. The calculator buys complete sets, then shows the piece count and optional package or pallet rounding for every size.

Does the result include base and bedding sand?

It can calculate both volumes from depths you enter. The bedding field starts at the CMHA nominal 1 inch value in US mode, but it remains editable. Base depth stays blank because the calculator does not design a structural section.

Does this calculator optimize cuts or validate a manufacturer's pattern?

No. It estimates material from face dimensions and a repeating ratio. It does not draw a layout, optimize cuts, account for every joint, validate a product pattern, evaluate drainage or loads, or replace manufacturer, supplier, contractor, or engineer guidance.
