Mulch Calculator
Estimate cubic yards or cubic meters for one bed, then optionally round up to whole bags using the capacity printed on your product label.
One-bed estimate: choose a shape and units, then enter your finished depth. Add the volume printed on your bag label only if you want a whole-bag count.

Volumes round half up from unrounded rational values. Whole bags round up from the unrounded volume.
Volume and bag count are planning estimates. Confirm the bed dimensions and the volume printed on the product label before purchase.

Mulch volume formulas
Rectangle area = length × width. Multiply that area by the finished depth you enter to get volume. For a round bed, area ≈ π × (diameter ÷ 2)², then multiply by finished depth. The calculator uses the fixed π value 3.141592653589793, so every round-bed result is labeled approximate.
US mode takes horizontal dimensions in feet and depth in inches, then reports cubic yards, cubic feet, cubic meters, and liters. Metric mode takes horizontal dimensions in meters and depth in centimeters, then reports cubic meters, liters, cubic yards, and cubic feet. NIST conversion factors keep the unit changes deterministic.
Worked example: 12 ft × 9 ft × 3 in
A 12-foot by 9-foot rectangle has an area of exactly 108 square feet. A 3-inch finished depth is one quarter of a foot, so the volume is exactly 27 cubic feet, exactly 1 cubic yard, or 0.765 cubic meters when displayed to three decimals. If your own bag label says 2 cubic feet, 27 ÷ 2 is 13.5, so the whole-bag estimate rounds up to 14 bags.
Bag labels and finished depth
The optional bag field uses only the volume printed on the product you are considering. Package sizes vary, so this page has no maintained default. The whole-bag result always uses the exact unrounded calculated volume and rounds upward; it does not divide a rounded display value.
University of Minnesota Extension gives 2–4 inches as general guidance. The depth that fits a particular bed depends on its plants, site, and material. Keep mulch away from plant stems and tree trunks, following the linked extension guidance. Enter the finished depth you have chosen rather than treating one value as universal.
Input and rounding rules
Use an unsigned complete ASCII decimal with no more than six digits after an optional decimal point. Every required dimension and any supplied bag volume must be greater than 0 and no more than 1,000,000. Each original field value is limited to 80 characters before ASCII spaces, tabs, carriage returns, or line feeds are trimmed. Signs, exponent notation, commas, Unicode digits or whitespace, leading dots, trailing dots, fractions, and unit suffixes are rejected.
Accepted decimals use reduced BigInt rational arithmetic. Areas display up to two decimal places and volumes up to three, with decimal half-up rounding from the unrounded value. A positive value below the smallest display unit uses a less-than label instead of appearing as zero. This one-bed estimate does not add waste, settling, compaction, price, density, weight, delivery, or product advice.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate mulch for a rectangular bed?
Multiply length by width to get area, then multiply by your chosen finished depth after converting all dimensions to compatible units. This calculator reports cubic yards and cubic feet in US mode or cubic meters and liters in metric mode.
How does the round-bed calculation work?
The calculator uses area ≈ π × (diameter ÷ 2)², then multiplies that area by finished depth. Round-bed outputs say approximately because the calculator uses a fixed documented approximation of π.
How are whole bags calculated?
Enter the volume printed on your own bag label. The calculator divides the unrounded bed volume by that exact entered capacity and rounds up to a whole bag. It does not assume a standard package size.
What depth should I enter?
Enter the finished depth you have chosen for your bed. University of Minnesota Extension describes 2–4 inches as general guidance, while the appropriate depth depends on the plants, site, and material.
Does this calculator estimate price, weight, or delivery?
No. It estimates volume for one rectangular or round bed and can count whole bags from a capacity you enter. It does not estimate price, density, weight, tons, delivery, products, or material suitability.
