Decimal feet, feet plus inches, and survey use
Decimal feet keeps the whole measurement in one unit, so 5.5 ft means five and one-half feet. Feet plus inches rewrites that same length as 5 ft 6 in.
The precision setting applies to the displayed decimal result and to the remaining inches. A rounded 12-inch remainder is carried into the next foot.
The fractional result rounds the full unrounded length to the nearest 1/8 inch, then splits it into feet and remaining inches. Its signed error is fraction minus exact length, so a plus sign means the fraction is longer and a minus sign means it is shorter.
