KB to MB formulas

For decimal storage units, MB = KB ÷ 1,000. For binary units, MiB = KiB ÷ 1,024. KB and KiB are not interchangeable labels, so both systems stay visible in the result.

Decimal versus binary labels

Storage vendors and file-transfer limits commonly use decimal KB, MB, and GB. Some operating systems and technical tools use binary-sized values, sometimes while displaying a decimal-looking label. When a limit matters, check whether its documentation says MB or MiB.

Bytes, not bits

This converter treats KB as kilobytes. A lowercase b technically means bits, while uppercase B means bytes. Network speeds such as Mbps need a bit-rate converter and are outside this page.

Frequently asked questions

How many KB are in one MB?

In decimal SI units, 1 MB is 1,000 KB. In binary IEC units, 1 MiB is 1,024 KiB. This page shows both instead of silently mixing the standards.

Is 1024 KB equal to 1 MB?

1024 KB is 1.024 MB in decimal units. It is 0.9765625 MiB. The exact binary statement is 1024 KiB = 1 MiB.

What is the difference between MB and MiB?

MB is a decimal megabyte of 1,000,000 bytes. MiB is a binary mebibyte of 1,048,576 bytes.

Does lowercase kb mean kilobits?

Technically, lowercase b denotes bits and uppercase B denotes bytes. This KB to MB page converts bytes; it does not convert network bit rates.
