Gallons to Pounds Converter

Convert US liquid gallons and avoirdupois pounds with a stated density. Use the fresh-water estimate at 70°F or enter a custom density; there is no fixed gallon-to-pound factor.

US liquid gallons + stated density. Gallons measure volume, so every pound result is a physical estimate for the selected conditions.

Enter a decimal, scientific number, or fraction. A typed US gal or lb label overrides From. Imperial, UK, and dry gallons are rejected.

Private by design: amounts, density, and results stay in this tab and are not stored, added to the URL, or sent with analytics. Analytics receives fixed interaction categories only.

Estimated avoirdupois pounds ≈ 8.3283 lb Water at 70°F · ≈ 8.3283 lb/US gal Water results use four decimal places because the cited source density is rounded.

Estimate only. Density varies with substance, composition, and temperature. Verify the actual material with a supplier specification, SDS, measurement, or qualified professional. Do not use this result as certified shipping, lifting/load, structural, hazardous-material, or regulated-use advice.

Gallons and pounds need a density

A US liquid gallon measures volume. An avoirdupois pound measures mass or weight in ordinary US usage. The pounds in a gallon therefore change with the substance, composition, temperature, and pressure. This calculator always keeps the density assumption beside the estimate.

Water at 70°F default

The USGS table row labeled 70°F/21°C lists fresh water at approximately 62.300 lb/ft³. NIST Handbook 44 gives exactly 231 cubic inches in one US liquid gallon and 1,728 cubic inches in one cubic foot.

The calculation is 62.300 × 231 ÷ 1,728 = 47,971/5,760, or approximately 8.3283 lb per US liquid gallon. The engine retains that rational value internally, while the page displays four decimal places because the empirical source density is rounded.

Gallons to pounds formula

Estimated pounds = US liquid gallons × density (lb/US gal). With the default water assumption, 5 US gal is approximately 41.6415 lb.

Pounds to gallons formula

Estimated US liquid gallons = pounds ÷ density (lb/US gal). The reverse direction and Swap use the same density. Swap carries the unrounded rational result rather than copying the four- or nine-decimal display text back into the calculation.

Using a custom density

Choose Custom density when you have a documented value in pounds per US liquid gallon for the actual material and conditions. Decimals and fractions are accepted. The calculation uses the entered value exactly as a rational number, but the physical result remains approximate because the underlying material can vary.

Limits and safe use

This version intentionally omits generic milk, gasoline, and honey presets because composition and temperature change their densities. It excludes Imperial gallons, UK gallons, US dry gallons, other mass or volume units, batch conversion, and a separate reverse route.

Amounts, custom densities, and results are limited to 1 trillion. Positive values below the browser's smallest nonzero numeric magnitude, approximately 4.94 × 10−324, are rejected instead of being shown as zero. Swap keeps the exact rational result only when that exact value fits the same 80-character input limit; otherwise it leaves the current estimate unchanged and explains the limit.

For purchasing, shipping, lifting, tank loading, structural work, hazardous materials, or regulated measurements, verify the current density and conditions from a supplier specification, safety data sheet (SDS), direct measurement, or a qualified professional. This calculator does not certify a load or replace those sources.

Frequently asked questions

How many pounds are in a gallon?

There is no universal answer because gallons measure volume and pounds measure mass or weight. Using the cited fresh-water row at 70°F, one US liquid gallon is estimated at about 8.3283 avoirdupois pounds.

Why does temperature matter for water?

Density changes with temperature and dissolved material. This page derives its default from the USGS table row labeled 70°F/21°C, which lists 62.300 lb/ft³.

What formula converts gallons to pounds?

Estimated pounds = US liquid gallons × density in pounds per US liquid gallon. The reverse estimate divides pounds by the same density.

Can I enter a custom density?

Yes. Enter a positive density in lb per US liquid gallon that applies to the actual substance and conditions. The same density stays selected when you swap directions.

Does this support Imperial or dry gallons?

No. This page supports US liquid gallons and avoirdupois pounds only. Imperial, UK, and US dry gallons are different units and are rejected rather than guessed.

Can this estimate certify a shipment or safe load?

No. Verify the actual material density and conditions from a supplier specification, SDS, measurement, or qualified professional. Do not use this estimate as certified shipping, lifting/load, structural, hazardous-material, or regulated-use advice.
