Expression Simplifier

Simplify a bounded algebra or constant-complex expression with exact arithmetic, visible steps, and explicit domain limits—entirely in your browser.

Exact, bounded, browser-only Supported syntax

Use numbers, x or i, + - * / ^, and parentheses. Use either x or i in an expression, not both; 200 characters maximum.

Try:

Accepted2x, x/2, (x+1)^2, 2+3i, i^27

Not in this versionequations, functions, x+i, variable denominators, negative powers

Private by design: the parser and exact arithmetic run in a local Worker. Your expression, result and steps are not uploaded or saved.

Result and real reduction steps

Your supported result, its bounded trace, and copy/export actions will appear here. No account or video unlock is required.

One bounded parser, two exact branches

The form recognizes one symbolic variable, x, or the imaginary unit i—not both together. Polynomial input is reduced to exact rational coefficients through degree 8. Constant complex input keeps exact real and imaginary rational parts. This narrow split handles both 2(5x+4)-3x and i^27 without pretending to be a full computer algebra system.

Steps are attached to the actual reduction

For the algebra example, distribution creates 2·5x + 2·4 − 3x, multiplication gives 10x + 8 − 3x, and like-term collection gives 7x + 8. For i^27, the exponent is reduced modulo four before the cycle result is shown. An already canonical input says it is already simplified instead of inventing work.

Why variable denominators stop safely

Cancelling matching factors can change where an expression is defined. In (x-1)x/(x-1), the original denominator is zero at x=1. This version therefore does not return a bare x. It shows the verified excluded value for a linear denominator, uses a generic warning when it cannot prove the full set, and disables result actions.

Supported syntax and limits

Input is limited to 200 ASCII characters, 100 parsed nodes, 20 parenthesis levels, 12 significant digits per literal, 6 fractional places, polynomial degree 8, complex powers from 0 through 1,000, and 256-bit exact numerators and denominators. The parser accepts only numbers, x, i, + - * / ^, parentheses, and documented implicit multiplication such as 2x or 2(x+1).

Local Worker and private receipts

A dedicated browser Worker performs parsing and reduction behind a 500 ms watchdog. Editing or canceling terminates the active Worker, and invalid or timed-out input produces no answer. Copy and .txt export use only the current visible answer and steps. Nothing in the task requires a backend, remote solver, account, cloud upload, or saved history.

Frequently asked questions

How do I simplify i^27?

Powers of i repeat every four exponents. Because 27 mod 4 is 3, i^27 has the same value as i^3, which is -i. Use this calculator to simplify i^27 and see the exact four-power cycle in the receipt.

Why is 2(5x+4)-3x equal to 7x+8?

Distribute 2 to get 10x + 8, then combine 10x and -3x. The result is 7x+8. The displayed steps come from the same bounded reducer that creates the answer.

Does this expression simplifier solve equations?

No. It simplifies supported single-variable polynomial expressions and constant complex expressions. It does not solve equations, graph functions, do calculus, or promise a result for arbitrary mathematics.

Why won't it cancel (x-1) in (x-1)x/(x-1)?

The original denominator is zero at x=1. Returning only x would hide that excluded input. This version stops at variable denominators, keeps the domain warning beside the input, and creates no copyable answer.

Which expressions are supported?

Use exact integers or decimals, +, -, *, /, ^, parentheses, the single variable x, or the imaginary unit i. Polynomial degree is capped at 8; complex powers are nonnegative integers through 1,000. Functions, equations, x and i together, and variable denominators are outside this version.

Are my expressions sent to a solver or saved?

No. Parsing, exact rational and complex arithmetic, steps, copy, and text export run in your browser. The page does not put your expression or result in a URL or local storage, and aggregate analytics omit all math values.
