EDT Time Now
Compare fixed EDT with New York's actual Eastern Time, then convert the date and time you were given.
Two clocks, one important difference
EDT is fixed; Eastern Time is regional
Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) is always UTC−4. Eastern Time (ET) is the regional term: New York uses EST at UTC−5 during standard time and EDT at UTC−4 while U.S. daylight saving time is active. That is why a Google clock labeled “Eastern Time” can disagree with a fixed EDT clock by one hour in winter.
Check whether New York is on EDT or EST
The second live clock follows America/New_York instead of forcing a fixed offset. For a future or past appointment, choose “New York Eastern Time” in the converter. The result uses the selected date to label the source honestly as EST or EDT.
Convert a time that explicitly says EDT
If an invitation explicitly says “3:00 PM EDT,” choose fixed EDT. The instant is 7:00 PM UTC on every date. When New York is on EST, the tool warns that a sender who really meant New York local time may have used the wrong abbreviation.
Spring gaps and repeated fall times
Fixed EDT has no clock change. New York regional time does: a local time in the spring-forward gap does not exist, while a time in the fall-back hour occurs twice. The checker rejects nonexistent times and states the assumption for an unlabeled repeated time.
Scope and privacy
This page distinguishes fixed EDT from New York's regional Eastern Time; it does not claim that every country using an EDT abbreviation follows U.S. clock-change dates. Conversion runs in your browser using IANA time-zone data. Your selected date, time, and destination zone are not sent to ToolNeko.
Frequently asked questions
What does EDT mean in time?
EDT means Eastern Daylight Time. It is the fixed UTC−4 offset used by places such as New York while daylight saving time is active. EDT itself never changes offset.
Are EST and EDT the same now?
No. EST is fixed at UTC−5 and EDT is fixed at UTC−4. New York's regional Eastern Time changes between those labels by date; the two live clocks above show whether New York currently matches fixed EDT.
Is it EDT now in New York?
The live status above checks New York with the IANA America/New_York rule and states whether the city is currently observing EDT or EST. It does not assume EDT year-round.
What does 3 PM EDT mean?
3:00 PM EDT is always 7:00 PM UTC because EDT is UTC−4. Enter 3:00 PM in fixed EDT mode to convert that instant to your own time zone and preserve any calendar-date change.
Does EDT change for daylight saving time?
EDT is already the daylight-saving label and stays fixed at UTC−4. A region such as New York changes between EST and EDT; use ET when you mean the region regardless of season.
