Check mark vs tick: which one?
They're the same symbol. Americans usually say check mark, while British and Australian English often say tick. ✓ is the lighter check and ✔ the heavy one; ✅ is the emoji version, usually shown as a white check on a green box.
√ is not a check mark. It's the square root sign (U+221A). It looks similar in some fonts, but screen readers read it as "square root."
Checkboxes for lists and forms
☐ (U+2610) is an empty box, ☑ (U+2611) a checked box and ☒ (U+2612) a box with an X. Paste them into a document to make a printable checklist, such as ☐ Buy milk.
These are plain characters, so they can't be clicked on or off. For interactive checklists, use the checklist feature in your notes app, Google Docs or Word. For fillable forms, use Google Forms or a Word checkbox content control.
