Asphalt Calculator

Combine paved sections, subtract cutouts, and keep base material, allowance, and the suggested order amount visible.

Enter feet and compacted inches.

Section 1
Project assumptions 145 lb/ft³ · 5% allowance · no price

Density, compacted thickness, allowance, and supplier order increments vary. Edit these values to match the project.

Estimate one area or a complete paving project

Enter a rectangle or a known area for each part of the project, then enter its compacted thickness. Paved sections add material. Cutout sections subtract both area and volume, which is useful for islands, drains, utility covers, or another area that will not be paved. The calculator rejects a project when cutouts leave no positive paved area or compacted volume.

Formula and the 50 × 20 × 3 example

For a rectangle, area equals length × width. Compacted volume equals area × compacted thickness. Base mass equals net compacted volume × entered density. Allowance mass equals base mass × allowance percentage ÷ 100, and suggested order mass equals base mass + allowance mass.

A 50 ft × 20 ft section at 3 in compacted thickness has 1,000 ft² of area and 250 ft³, or 9.259 yd³, of compacted volume. At 145 lb/ft³ it weighs 18.125 short tons before allowance. A 5% allowance adds 0.906 short tons, producing a 19.031-short-ton estimate. At an entered price of $100 per short ton, the material-only estimate is $1,903.13. The engine keeps reduced BigInt rational values through every step and rounds only the displayed receipt.

Density and allowance are visible assumptions

The Western Federal Lands estimating handbook uses 0.072 short ton per cubic foot, based on 145 lb/ft³, and discusses an approximate 3–5% estimating allowance. The FHWA estimating table lists hot asphalt mix at 2,325 kg/m³, or 145.2 lb/ft³. The Asphalt Institute notes a typical range of 142–148 lb/ft³ and advises calculating cubic feet, multiplying by density, and dividing pounds by 2,000 for short tons.

Those references support an estimating starting point, not a universal mix value. Change the density and allowance to the project's specifications. The receipt shows the exact entries used, base weight, added allowance, order weight, effective depth, and coverage per short ton or metric tonne.

Planning boundary

This page estimates compacted material quantity from the geometry and assumptions entered. It does not design pavement, recommend thickness or mix, certify density or compaction, evaluate subgrade, drainage, loads, structural suitability, or code compliance, and it does not fetch live prices.

The optional price covers material only. It excludes labor, equipment, tax, delivery, haul distance, supplier minimums, truck capacity, order increments, and site conditions. Confirm density, compacted thickness, allowance, pricing, and ordering terms with the project drawings, contractor, engineer, and supplier.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how much asphalt I need?

Calculate each paved area's compacted volume, subtract any cutout volumes, multiply the net volume by the entered compacted density, and then add only the allowance percentage you choose. This calculator keeps base weight, allowance weight, and suggested order weight separate.

How much asphalt is needed for 1,000 square feet at 3 inches thick?

At the editable default of 145 lb/ft³, 1,000 ft² at 3 inches compacted depth is 250 ft³, 9.259 yd³, and 18.125 short tons before allowance. With a 5% allowance, the displayed order estimate is 19.031 short tons.

Can I combine several driveway or parking areas?

Yes. Add up to 20 paved sections. Each section can use a rectangle or a known area and can have its own compacted thickness. Add cutout sections to subtract islands, drains, or other unpaved areas.

What asphalt density does the calculator use?

US mode starts at 145 lb/ft³, matching the Western Federal Lands estimating handbook's estimating factor. Metric mode starts at 2,325 kg/m³ from the FHWA estimating table. Both are editable because mix density and compaction vary.

Does the allowance percentage include supplier rounding?

No. It applies the exact percentage you enter to the unrounded base volume and weight. Supplier minimums, truck capacity, order increments, delivery, tax, and site losses are not added automatically.

Can this calculator choose pavement thickness or an asphalt mix?

No. It estimates material from your entered geometry and assumptions. It does not design pavement, recommend thickness or mix, certify compaction, evaluate structure or drainage, or replace a contractor, engineer, or supplier.
